THURSDAY EVENING – Japanese Pottery: History, techniques, & form with Yuki Watanabe
Instructor Yuki Watanabe will be teaching our Thursday Evening class, Japanese Pottery: History, techniques, & form from 6:30-9:00 PM. This session runs from 6/25/26-8/13/26 for 8 classes.
Description: Explore the artistry, history, and regional traditions of Japanese pottery from 14th-centry ceramics to the Mingei movement. Each session begins with an introduction to a distinct pottery style, examining its historical context, geology, and firing methods. Throughout the course, you will learn and experiment with a wide range of forming and surface techniques, including handbuilding and humpthrowing, kurinuki (hallowing), mishima (inlay), kohiki, hakeme (brushwork), kushime (combing), nawame (rope impression), tobikannna (chattering), etc. We will apply these techniques to create traditional Japanese forms such as chawan (matcha bowls), sake sets, plates, vases, etc. Emphasis will also be placed on developing a sense of landscape on your wares, bringing out the character of clay to life.
