I
started doing ceramics in about 1972 for about a year; I took a sabbatical from
clay for 25 years and began once again working with clay in 1994.
While I have had a couple of classes in hand building and throwing clay,
most of my techniques are self-taught. My
pieces are all functional, are highly influenced by the Arts and Crafts
movement, and rely heavily on my use of wooden forms and shapes which I make in
my wood working shop. Although
I use a variety of glazes, my favorite glazes are blood red and celadon in
color, both of which can be quite difficult to achieve in the firing process.
Everything is fired to “cone 10” which is very stressful for the hand
built pieces but results in a unique appearance; rarely are pieces identical
because of placement in the kiln and the idiosyncrasies of the firing. I sell pieces only at Ruby’s Clay Studio; however, I can be contacted through e-mail at ktool@comcast.net
